The City of Cumberland has saved and placed into storage the old Allegany High School entryway façade and is currently seeking Request for Proposals (RFP’s) for its reuse. This entryway was located at 616 Sedgwick Street.
Project Overview: A memorandum of agreement between State of Maryland agencies and the Allegany County Commissioners allowed for salvage of architectural elements of the Old Allegany High School. The portion of the façade with the school’s name will be reused at the site of the new Allegany High School. The City of Cumberland has agreed to store the remainder of the entryway façade.
Project Goal: Preserving a society’s cultural and architectural heritage, while balancing city decline and growth, is a difficult task. The City of Cumberland is offering the opportunity for a group, organization or individual to preserve the remaining materials from the old Allegany High School façade. If done well, the hope is that the reuse of this façade will provide a link between the past and the present, by taking pieces of the old and giving it a new use. At this time, the City will not be distributing single pieces to individuals.
Scope of Work: The façade is approximately 20’ tall by 12-15’ wide. It consists of nearly 80 pieces of block (numbered and labeled) which will need to be reconstructed on a structurally sound flat surface.
Submission Requirements: RFP’s for the reuse of old Allegany High School façade, will be accepted beginning May 1, 2022 and will be reviewed on a rolling basis as they are received. The successful applicant will provide a well thought out plan for the reuse of these materials. In addition, the successful applicant will be required to sign and return a release of liability form and will also be responsible for removing the salvaged materials from a designated storage site. Neither the City of Cumberland, nor Allegany County, will assist with material removal. An escorted site visit to inspect the salvaged façade may be scheduled by request only. Those who trespass on the site where the items are stored will be prosecuted.
RFP’s should be addressed to the Mayor and City Council at the address below. For more information on the façade, or to schedule a site visit please contact City Hall at 301-722-2000.
