City of Cumberland Proceeding with Groundhog Day Celebration

The City’s Downtown Development Commission (DDC) and the Parks and Recreation Department have initiated planning for the 14^th annual Groundhog Day Celebration at City Hall.

On Tuesday, February 2^nd, Cumberland’s furry prognosticator, Murray, will help answer the question, “Will it be an early Spring or six more weeks of Winter?”.  On hand to interpret Murray’s prediction will be Mayor Raymond Morriss, City Council members and Bob Candy of the Tri-State Zoological Park.

The program will begin shortly after 7 a.m. with the Mayor reading the Proclamation, and Murray making his appearance at sunrise, 7:22 am.  The event will be livestreamed on the City's Facebook page, but revelers who wish to participate in-person will be welcomed to view the prognostication from City Hall Plaza.  Masks and social distancing will be required and no activities will be held indoors this year.

A virtual coloring contest is underway for youngsters, up to 10 years old, with a prize for the most original and unique entry.   Coloring sheets are available a number of ways:

• Pick up in-person from the Office of Community Development in the lower level of City Hall

All entries are due back no later than Noon on Monday, February 1^st and can be dropped off to the Community Development office, placed in the Drop Box at City Hall, or emailed to: melinda.kelleher@cumberlandmd.gov.
