[ARCHIVED] Chuck Ternent to be named Police Chief for the City of Cumberland

The City of Cumberland announces that John “Chuck” Ternent is expected to be named Police Chief at the next public meeting of the Mayor and City Council, which is currently scheduled for April 21, 2020.

After an extensive search process that began in November, 2019, Ternent was selected from a diverse pool of eighteen (18) candidates to succeed Charles Hinnant, who retired in November.  Ternent has served in the capacity of Acting Police Chief since Hinnant’s retirement and has been with the department for 27 years.  Ternent will begin his official duties as Chief of Police once employment terms are agreed to and approved by the Mayor and City Council.

“Acting Chief Ternent stood out in many ways during the interview process and  has demonstrated that he is well-prepared to take the reins of our police department,” commented Mayor Raymond Morriss.  “His education, command experience, CALEA leadership, and knowledge of the department and our community make him a natural fit to serve as a key member of our leadership team.  Throughout the process, his qualifications consistently rose to the top and we have received countless recommendations on his behalf.  We are excited to move forward with this appointment and we look forward to working with Chuck to lead our community successfully and safely into the future.”

Questions regarding this matter may be directed to the Mayor’s office at 301-759-6414 or by emailing ray.morriss@cumberlandmd.gov
