[ARCHIVED] Cumberland Wi-Fi service to be replaced with free City Center Wi-Fi

The City of Cumberland announces that the current Cumberland Wi-Fi service will be discontinued on August 31, 2015 and a new, more cost effective Wi-Fi service designed for free use in the Center City area will be set in place.

“The City’s Wi-Fi system was originally designed to provide internet service throughout the city of Cumberland,” according to Jeff Rhodes, City Administrator. “With only about 45 customers currently using the City’s service, we cannot continue to operate the existing system cost-effectively.”

With the pending discontinuance of the current system, the City’s IT department worked to develop a smaller, more cost effective Wi-Fi system designed to enhance the downtown environment by providing free access to citizens, businesses, and visitors.

According to Mayor Brian Grim, “This enhanced service for the Center City area is intended to encourage greater use of the downtown and attract new activity. The free service will be promoted as a ‘perk’ for the downtown and will hopefully nurture new business and tourism initiatives.”

Additional information regarding discontinuance of the old system or initiation of the new may be obtained from the City Administrator’s office at 301-759-6424.
